Founded in 2005 as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, the Friends of the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge promotes conservation, awareness, and appreciation of the wildlife and habitats of the Refuge Complex and provides assistance to Refuge programs with a focus on Environmental Education. The complex is comprised of three important sanctuaries along the Kentucky Lake: Big Sandy Unit, Duck River Unit, Busseltown Unit. Also included in the complex is the Cross Creeks Wildlife Refuge on the banks of Lake Barkley.
